MECHANICS MILL · 1868
Built for Industry. Reimagined for Living.
Long before it became Commonwealth Landing, this riverfront landmark was Mechanics Mill, built in 1868 during Fall River’s rise as a textile capital. Its waterfront wharf received coal for the boilers that powered the mill.
In 2017, the apartments opened a new chapter for Mechanics Mill. Today, generous loft layouts, high ceilings and original character bring modern living to this historic waterfront setting.
THE FALL RIVER LINE
The Steamer Commonwealth
In 1908, the Fall River Line introduced Commonwealth, the last and largest of its celebrated side-wheel steamers. The 456-foot night boat carried as many as 2,000 travelers between New York, Newport, and Fall River, where passengers could continue by train to Boston.
Ornate salons, private suites, and an elegant dining room made the journey part of the destination. Known as the “Giantess of the Sound,” Commonwealth became a symbol of a remarkable era on the waterfront.
